WP Tavern has reported that WordPress is officially dropping support for PHP 5 in the upcoming 6.3 release, due on August 8.
WordPress’ minimum supported version has sat at PHP 5.6.20 since 2019, but will be updated to 7.0.0 in the next release. The recommended PHP version will stay the same at 7.4+.
The usage of PHP 5.6 has dropped to 3.9% of monitored WordPress installations as of July 2023.
The WooCommerce 8.2 release, due in October, will require PHP 7.4 or newer to work.
The benefits to increasing the minimum supported PHP version manifest over time including within the plugin and theme ecosystem so this is good news.

Playground lets you run a WordPress instance directly from your web browser without having to mess around with a server — no need to install PHP, MySQL or Apache.
You can try it out on playground.wordpress.net. In a few seconds, you get a brand new WordPress site with a full admin panel and the ability to create posts and pages.
It’s a sandboxed environment where you can try new things, showcase some stuff you’ve been working on and test your code against different versions of WordPress and PHP.
Ella van Durpe even used WordPress Playground as the basis for a new note-taking app for iOS and macOS. Blocknotes is a stripped down version of WordPress that lets you create notes like you would create posts in WordPress.
