Hi there, hope you're having a great Friday!
This is Colm and Simon from CommerceGurus, with a handpicked weekly roundup of eCommerce articles.
Homepage carousels, while visually appealing, often introduce significant usability issues that can negatively impact user experience.
Baymard Institute's research indicates that 46% of eCommerce sites with homepage carousels experience performance problems.
Most critically, studies consistently find that users rarely interact with carousels - and the vast majority only ever see the first slide, rendering the rest of the content largely ineffective.
More pitfalls include slides changing just before a user clicks, leading to unintended navigation, and auto-rotating slides that move too quickly for users to absorb the information.
As a more effective alternative, Baymard recommends using static content sections on the homepage.
This approach simplifies development and maintenance while ensuring that key content remains consistently visible to users.

On their X account, Oddit showcased a nice example of a before/after product page redesign.
Some key areas include:
- New top bar displaying the free shipping promotion
- Instead of dots, show small gallery thumbnails (Our CommerceKit Product Gallery can do both by the way)
- Highlight the average review rating as well as the review quantity, this is extremely valuable particularly if you have a large number.
- Displaying what makes their wearable thermal device unique
The only extra adjustment I would make would be to see if you could fit the 'Add to cart' call to action button above the 'Helps with' labels at the end of the screen.

Here are two ideas that can be true at the same time: SEO offers worse returns than it used to. SEO is still one of the best marketing channels.
- SERPs are drowning in AI-generated content.
- Google’s algorithms seem biased towards brands like Reddit.
- AI Overviews are siphoning clicks away from creators.
- Google is losing its monopoly on knowledge management as more people turn to LLMs.
Talk to website owners, and you’ll even hear whispers that some companies are losing 20–40% of their monthly clicks from search.
But if advising a startup SEO is still the very first channel to test.
However, there should be different expectations, and less certainty of outright success, but you can still expect it to be a major source of growth.
